2013 Malayalam Boxoffice Report

It is that time of the year when the trade analysts and boxoffice followers are eager to appraise how the industry has performed during the first half of the year. Here comes BOV with its trademark half yearly report for 2013.

Out of a total of 85 releases, 13 films have managed to break even, 10 films were Flops, and all the other 62 films were declared Boxoffice Disasters. 2013 is yet to present Mollywood with an outright Blockbuster, but has produced 2 Super Hits and 8 Hits till now.

SUPER HITS

ROMANS is the run-away winner of the year till now with a life time gross of 10.94 Crores, which is yet to be surpassed this year. The film ran for 50+ days in 29 theaters, and was declared a Super Hit within 3 weeks of release. 

The dark horse of the first half has been Alphonse Puthren's bilingual starring Nivin Pauly - NERAM. The film made in a shoestring budget raked in 5.85 Crores and is the second most profitable movie of the first half.


HITS

KAMMATH & KAMMATH
Gross : 10.34 Crores
The multi-starrer secured a thunderous initial as expected and cashed in on the wide release. Though the mixed opinion caused wide removals from the 4th week, the film had grossed enough to be declared a clean hit.

SOUND THOMA
Gross : 10.13 Crores
Dileep continued to stamp his authority over Mollywood Boxoffice with the stupendous success of SOUND THOMA. The film gave director Vyshakh his fourth consecutive hit.

IMMANUEL
Gross : 7.34 Crores
The Lal Jose family entertainer carried the best word of mouth among the Vishu releases and finished with the highest solo film gross for a Mammootty starrer after Best Actor in 2010.

HONEY BEE 
Gross : 7.19 Crores (24 Days)
Honey Bee went on a roll amongst the youth audience, and held up big time to secure the second solo success for Asif Ali after Salt N Pepper. The potential Super Hit shall in all probabilities, end up with a lifetime gross of 8.50 - 9 Crores.

ABCD
Gross : 6.45 Crores (17 Days)
ABCD marked Dulquar Salman's arrival as a Mass Hero who can pull off a commercial movie on his shoulders. The film managed to open big and continued to perform well despite heavy rains.

The other movies which were declared a HIT by the trade are MUMBAI POLICE (6.42 Crores), BHARYA ATHRA PORA(4.83 Crores) and CELLULOID (4.57 Crores). AMEN (5.47 Crores) had a stupendous run at the boxoffice, but finally ended up in the  ABOVE AVERAGE category, due to the high cost of production. DRACULA (2.85 Crores) and NEE KO NJA CHAA (2.35 Crores) were the other film which managed to break even.

The notable failures of the year are LADIES & GENTLEMAN, 3 DOTS, RED WINE and HOTEL CALIFORNIA.

This years Onam came with 5 major release First came MegaStar Mammootty's
Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus it started of slowly but gained momentum in the box Office later in the week.
Benny P Nayarambalam's script succeeded in satisfying the fans and also the family audience waiting for a clean entertainer
for this festive season. It turned out to be a completely Mammootty's show.
Then came Janapriya Nayakan Dileep's Sringaravelan.. it opened very well among the family audiences and it gave a great opening
But the movie came with Mixed reactions and hence its long run is still a question mark, butDileep is known to bring out blockbusters from these kind of movies which came be seen from his recent hits .It has been giving a good competition to Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus.

Fahadh's North 24 Kaatham opened very poorly but the movie got a steady response by the mid week but the movie could not compete with the mass of Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus and Sringara velan.
Fahadh's performance and Anil Radhakrishnan's off-beat theme has been bringing in good response slowly but steadily. The word of mouth coming in and may help in cities but chances are rare to gain momentum in the rural parts.

Multistarrer D Company and MT- Hariharan team's Ezhamathe Varavu have washed away completely None of these have been able to do a decent business.

A Case has been filed against actor Baburaj

A Case has been filed against actor Baburaj in connection with fraud land dealings.A fraud dealing of a half a crore rupees has been alleged in the case against the actor.The case against is that the actor took 50 lakh rupees from a export business.Nedumbassery police has registered a case upon the the instruction of I.G Padmakumar.Baburaj has said that the said that land belongs to a Nedumbassery native named Paulachan.He said that Paulachan has cheated him after offering to sell the land and that he has registered a case against Paulachan.

D Company Malayalam Movie Review

The first movie in this trilogy is Oru Bolivian Dairy 1995 directed by M.Padmakumar and starring Samuthirakani.The film tells the story of a Indian Maoist Leader 'Chowkidar' who comes to Kannavam forest in Wayanad to spread his ideologies among the local tribal people.Narien plays the role of a cop who narrates the story of 'Chowkidar' to reporter played by Ananya 15 years after the incident.Asif ali plays the role of Chinnan a young tribal youth who is inspired by the ideology of Chowkidar.Asif Ali's shows much promises to his role where as Samuthirakani fail to do so and his role is not much so different from Shikar.

The next story is 'Gangs of Vadakkumnathan'  the crime investigation directed by Diphan and written by Anoop Menon starring Jayasurya,Anoop Menon and Unni Mukundan.The story is about the gang war's in Thrissur with a religion backdrop.When Bangalore business 'Mallya' is murdered, Anoop Menon aided by the cops Unni Mukundan and Irshad investigate the crime.Jayasurya plays the role of Varaalu Jasion' a local goonda in Thrissur ,has done a fantastic job while Unni Mukundan who plays the role of a brillaint police officer couldn't do the role convincingly.The dialogue in the film lacks punch ,the anthology ends  with a suspenseful end.

The last Judgment starring Fahad Fazil ,Bhama,Tanusree Ghosh plays prominent roles is written and directed Vinod Vijayan.The movie revolves around a murder case and Fahad plays the role of a law student and Bhama paired opposite to him.'Ee Adutha Kalathu' fame Tanusree Ghosh plays the role of a Assistant Commissioner of Police.The movies  shows rather a unrealistic theme and is rather slow pace for a action movie and seems to drag.

The lead actors have done their bit perfectly but it was the weak script which spoil all of them.D Company  is a brilliant directorial venture but failed to amuse the audience

Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus is one of the most awaited films of Mammootty.The movie had already made news with its cast and crew.

Cleetus is goonda,but by chance he is offered to play the  role of Jesus in a Drama by Father Sunny[Siddique],which was supposed to be played during festivals.Things change in the life of Cleetus after that.Events that occur in the life of Cleetus starts to occur in his life too.What happens to Cleetus and his the people surrounding forms the rest of the story.

Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus can be regarded as a comedy entertainer.The first of the movie is entertaining.Mammootty's new look in the movie get applause from the audience.Sanam Shetty who debuted in the movie also proved herself.

North 24 Kaatham Malayalam Review:Fahad Fazil has done it again!!

The movie unfolds in a brilliant narrative and introduce us to our hero Hari Krishnan played by Fahad Fazil who is just like one of us.The absurd lengths to which he goes to keep himself clean and his behaviour is endeavouring and comic.He the odd one out every where in house and office.In his house his freak brother [Sreenath Bhasi] isthe antithesis of Hari Krishnan.The unique combination evake much laughter.At his office,he is a brillaint software engineer but receives every body's ridicule and enmity.

As someone who doesn't veer from routine,keeps everyone at distance,washes his hands in  the restroom in one of the weirdest manner,who doesn't share his seat or doesn't even like to travel on others bike,refuses to go to a business trip to Trivandrum,handling over his resignation.But he changes his decision when he comes to know that everybody in his office is celebrating regarding his resignation.He embarks on a journey on a hartal day which changes his life for ever.On the train everybody falls asleep but he stay awake, his fellow traveller [Nedumudi Venu] collapses after hearing a news from his phone.Though he is sitting nearby,it is Narayani [Swati Reddy] who holds the helpless man.Fate has it that the three of the gets off the next station and thus begins the journey of self realization,and transformation that the protagonist face in the 24 Kaatham travel.

The entire cast has done a brilliant job,Fahad Fazil as usual has gotten into the character and just lived it.Nedumudi Venu and Swati Reddy was  just brilliant.Rex Vijayan had done his job brilliantly as a music composer with songs.North 24 Katham is one of the best and refreshing movie that malayalam cinema as ever produced.North 24 Kaatham is one journey that no one should miss.IT IS A MUST WATCH FILM.

Sringara Velan Malayalam Movie Review: A typical Dileep Film

Sringara Velan is a romantic fighter  as the title suggests,Kannan played by Dileep,belongs to a traditional weaver family in Kuthampully,who looks down upon the profession of his ancestors.His father [babu Namboothiri] pleads him to take the profession to keep the hearth burning.But Kannan dreams  big and a typically senseless Vasu played by Kalabhavan Shajon messes his life.The narrative is almost standstill for about half an hour and only served by some jokes.

Then suddenly out of nothing illiterate goon Yesudas played by Lal appears as if to take the plot above but it takes the film away from the main plot.Kannan is entrusted a task by his father and he takes it up.Then the story shifts to Kottayil Kovilakam an old royal family.Nedumudi Venu plays the role of the current Thampuran and who was a childhood friend of Kannan's father.From there on the plot thickens and we can see Kannan becoming involved in the internal matters of the kovilakam.

The granddaughter Radhu played by Vedika is haunted by her past and her father is a underworld don in Mumbai played by Joe Mathew.Some issues related to her marriage and the unwitting of involvement of Kannan results in some undesirable developments.And it cause some consternation to her father and Kannan sees his destiny tied to Radhu.

Mean while the comedy track continue's unabated with Shajon and Lal making their customary inventions.Baburaj appears in cameo supporting a name Mahalingam.They tried to evoke laughter from the name itself  and it was also seen earlier.As the  climax of the film arrives we see a typical Uday-Sibi style arival of Underworld dons,fights,car chase etc.We can see a dozen loop hole in the film and there is no pint in dessecting them.

The film has all the ingredients for a family movie.The plot of the film is unrealistic and those who frown for senseless entertainments may not minding exposing to this sort of insensible entertainment .But it is a typical Dileep kind of Entertainment that has seen blockbusters in the past.

Ezhamathe Varavu Review :Malayalam Movie Review

Dr.Prasad [Vineeth] a renowned archaeologist reaches Wayanad as a part of a project of the Archaeology Survey of India.to find out the remains of ancient civilisation.He gets to acquaint with a rich landlord Gopinath Menon [Indrajith], who is an uncrowned king among the ribals with his quaint ways. Prasad has to stay in place for an extended period as part of the project and and though he fails to strike a rapport with uncouth and raw Gopinath,he is pleasantly surprised to know that his wife happens to be his ex-class mate Bhanu played by Bhavana, with whom once he was attached.

As he goes about his job,roaming around the forest,mingling with tribals assisted by a local girl Mala [Kavitha] with whom he shares a strange affection.A man eating tiger has turned up and messing up the lives of the tribals in the mean time.From Mala he gets to know some myths regarding the animal.According to the myths the tiger is a phantom who will only turn down his head only after killing seven women.Though he smirks of the girls worries,certain things after that changes his life for ever.

The untamed best inside Gopinath comes out after realising some bitter truth regarding his wife's past.And the hunter in him who had never faced a love lost for the refined and well manner Prasad,turns against him in a bestial manner.M.T's script shows that the ultimate destiny has its certitude and inescapable truth will follow you always like a shadow.The climax of the film was something that no one expected from the great writer.

Ezhamathe Varavu is a typical M.T-Hariharan film.The film will satisfy the lovers of good cinema.This film show that Malayalam cinema is not a victim of a generation change.

Memories, NPCB Collect Rs 4 Crore At The Box Office

Memories and Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi (NPCB), the two movies that got released last week is still running successfully all over. Both movies have already crossed Rs 4 crores collection at the Box Office. Four movies were released last week - Kadal Kadannu Oru Mathukutty, Memories, Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi and Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum. Memories has become the most successful among the four films. Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi stands second, but Kadal Kadannu Oru Mathukutty disappointed its audience and has been pushed to the last.

Memories was directed by Jeethu Joseph. Prithviraj and Meghna Raj played lead roles in the movie. Prithviraj played a police officer in this film, who was also a chronic alcoholic. The movie can be regarded as one of the best movies of the actor. His performance has won much accolades. The movie was successful to entertain all its audience. Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi was directed by Samir Thahir. Dulquar Salman and Sunny Wayne played lead roles in this film. Manipuri actress Surja Bala played the female lead in the film. The film was the first road trip movie in the industry. Next week, the industry will witness the release of three movies - Fahad Fazil's Olipporu, Indrajith's Arikil Oraal and Lal's Zachariyayude Garbhinikal. We will have to wait and watch who will win the audience heart among the three.

Sringaravelan Box Office Collection Report

Sringaravelan Opening Week Gross - 5.64 Crores (6 Days) - Second Highest of 2013

Sringaravelan grosses 5.64 Crores in the 6-day opening week, thus making it the second biggest opener of the year behind Kammath & Kammath. The film, which released on Saturday, had an above average opening, considering Dileep's previous flicks, but picked up tremendously from Monday morning, with the families thronging the theaters.

The metros are showing a tremendous trend, and are looking good for a long run despite the mixed word of mouth. Sringaravelan's best business has come from Calicut, Trichur and Kottayam. Ernakulam and Trivandrum occupancies have been excellent, but could have done better with higher capacity theaters in the first week. If the week days can hold up reasonably well, Sringaravelan is looking a lifetime gross of 12-13 Crores, and shall emerge as a Super Hit.

Sringaravelan emerges the Onam Boxoffice winner within a week of release. The satellite rights have been bagged by Asianet for 4.85 Crores.

Mallu Videos: Free Streaming of Malayalam Television Channels/Movie etc

Recently, via a friends recommendation, we came across a Mobile app on Android and Apple called "Mallu Videos".  It's not the most pretty app but it brings together a lot of Malayalam Content onto the mobile for free. 

The apps are made by a company called "SmartProTech" and they give the following description for Mallu Videos:

Mallu Videos is collection of video links taken from different sites which are available publicly to everyone. You can watch latest dvd released movies, shows, kids cartoon, comedy and much more. 

For the most part the app does a good job of streaming video as well as various Malayalam Movies (don't know how legal it is).  On Apple and Android the app has some technical glitches at times but does work for the most part. 

Among the sections on the app ( Movies, TV ets. ), there are Malayalam Kids Cartoons and Malayalam Kids Nursery Rhymes sections that are sure to be big hit with young children.  I hope even if the Live Malayalam Television Channels and/or Movies go away at some point, that they continue to keep supporting the kids content.  This could be useful for many people as currently there is no one stop location to get this content on the phone/internet.
